How to Write Effectively in Plain Language

It is the wish of every writer to be absorbed in the eyes and heart of the audience so that not only their content but they themselves are remembered forever.

People often strive to write in long sentences with complexity supported by enriched vocabularies. Surprisingly, this is not what modern critics value in writing. So what is the best way to remain on top in writing? But before unlocking potential pearls of writing let us first, converse about the style adopted lately.

In our school times, teachers always directed us to write with heavy vocabularies and complex structures which we have deep-rooted to an extent that our writing provides an open-eye justification to it. But modern writing experts discard this way and bring to us a very simple yet encouraged style to write. Without further ado, let us dive in.

Use of active voice

The use of active voice is always essential in almost every type of writing. The potential reason is that it has the power to directly address the audience. For instance, if we are writing for any brand promotion, the use of passive voice will delimit the chances of persuading the audience and leave your brand promotional post unread. Active voice acts as a sword penetrating into the thought-process and decisive mind thus promising for the clients/customers/audience/readers attraction towards you.

The use of passive is not strictly prohibited but encouraged only when you want to remain less hostile towards your cause and if the information of the doer is missing or unnecessary to mention.

Keep sentences length short

According to writing geeks, the best word account for a sentence ranges between 15 to 20 words. But it is not necessary to keep every sentence of the same length. You can vary. You only need to stick to the idea of being impressive and comprehensible. For longer complicated sentences, break them into shorter segments. Because after all, you want to be read, understood, and remembered forever.

Use words you and we

Despite roaming around to drag your readers to the main point, just spill the core point before you might lose readers’ desire to listen to you.  Readers don’t want to find the treasure because you have already claimed to be their savior.  Use the “you” directive so that the readers feel listened to and spoken to. Talk to them like they are your friends. Communicate with them using the “We” pronoun. Because writing is not an obligation of the writer but an unspoken voice of both the readers and writers.

Don’t be afraid to give instructions

Covering any topic already proves your credibility in both research and implication. So, don’t be afraid to tell them validated rules upon which they would acquire the same command as you have.

Use Bullet points

Small blacklisted dots have non-encapsulated power to appeal to the readers in no time. Try to use bullet points when needed as it is considered the best form of appealing visuals.

Breaking Myths

Below are some of the myths which we will now unfollow because of their staleness.

  • You can start a sentence with and, but, because, so, or however.
  • You can split infinitives. So you can say to boldly go.
  • You can end a sentence with a preposition. In fact, it is something we should stand up for.
  • And you can use the same word twice in a sentence if you can’t find a better word.

Of course, this does not mean you should break these so-called rules every time – just when they make a sentence flow better.

Final Word

These were some of the tips and tricks used by modern plain English writers for better writing. Let us strive to own these and refine our writing style.

With best wishes and regards, hopefully, this article will provide you with some knowledge that seemed foreign.
